About this day out

Pennington Flash is a beloved beauty spot in Leigh and one of eight sites forming The Flashes of Wigan and Leigh, the first and only National Nature Reserve (NNR) in Greater Manchester, officially designated by Natural England in October 2022. Its wetland habitats were uniquely formed by 'flash' flooding of former coal mining sites and it is home to nationally significant wildlife, including the willow tit, the UK's most endangered small bird. The site offers stunning natural views, bird hides, walking and cycling trails, a visitor centre and café, and an adventure playground for families.
