About this day out
The ruins of Okehampton Castle cover a wooded ridge above the swift-flowing West Okement river. In the 14th century, Hugh Courtenay developed it into a palatial home, and the remains stretch from the keep mound to the tall gatehouse. After its last owner fell foul of Henry VIII the castle was abandoned, and its picturesque ruins later inspired Turner and other Romantic painters.

Open every day 10am-4pm (free entry season 1 April to 31 October 2026); opening is dependent on volunteer availability so there may be closures at very short notice

- A number of steps lead up to the castle from the entrance, with a further set of steep steps up to the keep; disabled visitors can be set down by the entrance where there are three disabled parking spaces; there are areas of uneven ground across the site, so sturdy footwear is recommended (site hazards include falling masonry, steep slopes, steep stairs and uneven surfaces)
