The experience

About this day out

Howlands Marsh is a 74-hectare nature reserve in St Osyth, Essex, one of the best coastal grazing marshes in the county, with an amazing display of wintering wildfowl and rare saltmarsh plants such as Sea Wormwood and Golden Samphire. A public footpath passes up the eastern side of the reserve, with a permissive path leading to a hide on stilts with good views over the estuary, and another hide on stilts at the southern end. Skylarks, Lapwing, Barn Owls and Marsh Harriers can be seen over the grassland, with overwintering Brent Geese and Curlew in winter.
