About this day out

Discovery Museum is a museum about Tyneside's history in Newcastle upon Tyne, managed by North East Museums on behalf of Newcastle City Council. Its Turbinia Atrium is dominated by Turbinia, the world's first steam-turbine powered vessel, and galleries include Newcastle Story, Story of the Tyne, Charge! The Story of England's Northern Cavalry, Tyneside Challenge, Science Maze and Destination Tyneside. Entry is free with donations welcome, and no booking is required.

Accessibility: Level access to all floors with ramped access from lower ground to ground in the Turbinia Atrium; lifts have voice announcers and Braille indicators. Two wheelchairs available to borrow at the Welcome Desk. Assistance dogs welcome. Audio-visual displays in Story of the Tyne, Tyneside Challenge, Working Lives and Destination Tyneside are subtitled, with BSL interpretation in the Charge! gallery. A 360 virtual reality accessibility tour and visual story (PDF/webpage) are available. Fire alarms have voice sounders, flashing lights and rolling text messages, with evac-chairs and refuge points. Parking: Two disabled bays in Blandford Square car park. Blue Badge holders can park free for one hour in any council car park (car must still be registered at the ticket machine) and free for unlimited time in on-street 'pay and display' bays.
