The experience

About this day out

Clearwell Caves is a vast natural cave system beneath the Royal Forest of Dean that has been mined for iron ore and ochre pigments for thousands of years, leaving magnificent caverns and the story of the Freeminers. Visitors walk through ten impressive caverns descending around 100ft underground, with the underground visit taking around 45 minutes. Above ground there is a Lamproom Café, gift shop and visitor centre, and the site has hosted filming for programmes including Dr Who, His Dark Materials and Willow.

Accessibility
The Caves are real mine workings with steep, uneven pathways that can be wet in places, with handrails in steeper areas — not suitable for people with walking difficulties. A children's single buggy can be taken through, but it is difficult for wheelchairs and double buggies, and the Caves are not accessible for mobility scooters or heavier electric wheelchairs. Disabled parking and access is available near the entrance to the caves, café and gift shop; carers enter free with evidence.
Parking
Plenty of free parking for visitors, with a car and coach park clearly signposted off the B4228. Disabled parking is available near the entrance to the caves, café and gift shop.
Dogs
No dogs or other animals are allowed underground in the Caves, except assistance dogs. Dogs are very welcome above ground, including in the Lamproom café, gift shop and around the site, with walks over Clearwell Meend nearby.
