About this day out
Blackwell – the Arts & Crafts house is a Grade I listed historic house just a 5-minute drive from Bowness-on-Windermere, designed in 1901 as a holiday home by architect Mackay Hugh Baillie Scott. It preserves almost all of its original Arts & Crafts features and hosts a rolling programme of contemporary craft exhibitions and events. The terraced gardens, originally designed by Thomas Mawson, offer views of Windermere and the Coniston Fells.
When to go
Opening calendar
1 April – 1 November 2026: Monday–Saturday, 10am–5pm; 2 November – 22 March 2027: Monday–Saturday, 10am–4pm. Closed Christmas Day and Boxing Day. Also open Sunday 15 and 22 November for the Winter Craft Fair and Sunday 14 March for the Ceramics Fair. Tea room stops serving main meals at 3pm; last orders for tea/coffee and tray bakes 15 minutes before closing.
