About this day out

Arbeia, South Shields Roman Fort lets visitors experience life on the edge of the Roman Empire in the heart of South Shields. It features full-scale reconstructed Roman buildings including the West Gate, Commanding Officer's house and a soldier's barrack block, plus one of the finest collections of finds from Roman Britain found in and around Arbeia. It is managed by North East Museums on behalf of South Tyneside Council.

Accessibility: Step-free access into the museum, the Commanding Officer's house and barrack block; accessible toilets next to the museum building; free wheelchair hire; assistance dogs welcome; seating available around the site. The fort site surfaces are generally flat but uneven (grass/gravel) and the reconstructed West Gate has no wheelchair access inside, though video views of the interior are available in the Commanding Officer's House. Fire alarms have voice evacuation sounders and visual flashing lights.
Parking: Street parking available (can be busy during school run times as the fort is opposite Hadrian Primary School); two coach bays on Baring Street; coaches and taxis can drop off at the main gates. Also a 14-minute walk from South Shields Transport Interchange (Metro and Bus).
Dogs: Assistance dogs only are welcome (a bowl of water can be provided on request)
